The New Faculty Network mentoring program is designed to support new faculty members’ professional growth while fostering a community of belonging across the university. This innovative program will familiarize new faculty with university expectations, practices, and resources.

The New Faculty Network complements existing departmental or college mentoring programs by offering additional support and resources to new full-time tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty at all locations. By leveraging the power of cross-disciplinary collaboration and the expertise of mentors from the Penn State Emerging Academic Leaders program (PSEAL), this program aims to provide an unparalleled mentorship experience.

Key objectives of the mentoring program include fostering academic and professional growth, sharing knowledge about institutional standards and practices, providing academic and career guidance, and enhancing academic performance and student success. Through a structured and supportive environment, the New Faculty Network empowers faculty members to thrive in their roles and contribute to Penn State’s mission of excellence in education, research, and service.

The mentoring practice within the New Faculty Network follows a comprehensive outline that ensures effective guidance and development for new faculty members. Here are some key elements of the program:

  1. Networked Cohorts: New faculty members will work collaboratively in specially formed cross-disciplinary cohorts with their peers, facilitated by experienced mentors from the PSEAL program. This networked approach allows participants to exchange ideas, support, and shared experiences.
  2. Professional Development: Mentees will have access to various training and professional development opportunities throughout the semester, including presentations and activities on the topics of university resources and structures, time management and goal setting, academic freedom and freedom of speech, work/life balance, and annual reviews and formulating your narrative statement.  These resources will further enrich their mentoring relationship and contribute to their personal and professional growth.
  3. Tailored Conversations: Mentors will guide cohorts in identifying specific areas of interest for conversation and provide recommended timely topics for discussion. This approach ensures that the mentoring experience is customized to meet each cohort’s unique needs and aspirations.

The New Faculty Network program represents Penn State University’s commitment to fostering excellence, collaboration, and support for faculty members at all stages of their careers. By providing new faculty with a strong foundation and empowering them with the tools and resources needed to succeed, this program will contribute to the long-term success of both individuals and the university as a whole.
